ipad 2 in Dubai - the stray thread collective
thestraythread.com is the proud owner of the ipad 2, which we’ll be hitting the streets with to gather more candidates for the thread collective, posting more real time updates, writing more articles more… well in time the many wonders of the ipad will reveal themselves. In the mean time, here are a few of what I fondly call my ‘time waster’ favorites.

Little Miss Robot Magazine from Digital Creative Studio out of the Netherlands is pretty dope. Not all the content is in English but there is enough to give it a whirl. I personally dig the opera experience they create with sketches and text to keep the viewer in music. Above are a few screen shots.

Paper Art Trends is an app that features paper artists from around the world. The portfolios take a little while to load but it can be worth it to see what these creative minds can do with paper.

I came across POST during a discussion on Film and Fashion Imagery at Art Dubai with the creative director and founder of this app. POST seeks to reinterpret what art, fashion and design can function with the boundaries of the ipad. The version I downloaded is a little glitchy but hopefully with an update I can get the full experience as I did when it was featured at the discussion panel.

LIFE offers some of it best photos from their archives, which you can search for by geographic location. I immediately zeroed in on the UAE to find a slideshow of "then and now" shots.

COOL HUNTING is just that. Search by category, design, tech, style, travel, culture, food and drink. This has the skinny on all things hip. For decades cool hunters have been scouting the world for trends for corporations but in recent years new technology has put the cool directly back in the hands of the people.

I am not a dude, I repeat NOT A DUDE, but I still find this app wicked. Any dude in this modern age most defiantly does have a personal valet in toe and chances are all the gentlemanly knowledge fathers are suppose to pass to sons was left by the wayside with the baby boomer generation. Part magazine, part how to manual this app is a must have for any modern man.

I love me some Vanity Fair and until early this year it was not available on these shores much to my chagrin. Although I am able to pick it up with ease at my neighborhood grocer I am opting to save some bark, ink and dirham with this app.

If you don't know VICE you have never had the pleasure of reading the Do's and Don'ts. If you were unsure about how cool Canada is just think VICE. In 1994 three unemployed Cannucks on welfare managed to found what is now the only free and independent global monthly magazine with edition in nearly 30 countries. This is not the kinda content (hello it's called VICE) you would expect to find anywhere in this region so this app (and viceland.com) is as close as you'll get. It is not the most sophisticated app but it will allow you to upload your own photos to VICE. Consider yourself warned on all fronts.

coming soon- reviews of creative and productivity apps for sketching, drawing, painting, designing........
